Water Words Claire Ewbank

Water Words
Claire Ewbank

We do not speak in monotone
(edit in colour, elaborate monochrome),
we wash our words with
surprise and intonation,
set them down on saucer cups,
lift them high to our lips to sip
then let them settle until we know them better
and share them round,
gently let the teapot tip.
Like the way the ocean breathes,
our language rises and recedes,
asks questions in ascending scores of steam,
replies in tangible cups of tea.

Claire Ewbank HeadshotClaire Ewbank has just finished her undergrad degree in French and German and is now entering the rest of life, or what one friend has termed ‘the wilderness’. Writer, drawer and violinist, creativity is one of the common threads in her life as she travels and finds community in different places. She is currently teaching English as a foreign language and is loving having the chance to discover her first language from a whole new perspective. She has recently started combining her poetry with visual art and you can find some of her videos on YouTube under ‘Claire Ewbank, Spoken Word’.

Philippa Cappelman HeadshotPhilippa Cappleman was born and lives in the UK and spent her childhood doodling pictures as much as possible until she eventually realised she was actually quite good at it and started taking it more seriously. She has a vague dream of going into art professionally but for the moment settles for selling a few drawings at a coffee shop in Durham while working for a charity in prisons and with ex-offenders in the community.
